About our club

The Kingston Phoenix Road Club is a cycling club based in the Kingston/Epsom/Sutton area of South London and Surrey, but with members who live all over the place, specifically from Kingston, Ewell, Epsom, Worcester Park, Cheam and Sutton.

We were formed in 1936 to allow members of the local cycle touring section to race with their friends rather than leave to join one of the many existing cycle racing clubs. Our main cycling sport is Time Trialling and we have a long and proud history in this sport.

We punch above our weight in the London South District and have recently been three-time winners of the Rawson Shield; a trophy awarded for the most amount of points accrued by a single club in a time trialling season. We have riders of all abilities taking part in time trialling and we also have a good number of women competitors who race with us. We have our own calendar of club events, which comprise mainly of fortnightly 10 mile time trials, a low cost and easy way of starting the sport, but we also organise 25 mile and hill climb events. Our Blue Riband event is the Kingston to Worthing TT, the only point-to-point time trial left in the country.

While time trialling is at the core of what we do as a club, many of our members also take part in other cycling events. In recent years, our members have taken part in Ride London, The Etape de Tour, The Tour of Flanders, The Dragon Ride, audax, crit racing and triathlons.

Away from the competitive side of the sport we have a growing number of off-road trail riders who have a fantastic knowledge of tracks and trails through many of our local woods and commons. A couple of times a year we organise weekend rides, recent examples are the ride from Epsom to Hindhead and back after a two night stopover and end to end on the South Downs Way. In 2018 we'll spend a weekend on the Taff Trail in South Wales.

We are a sociable bunch and organise Saturday rides that meet at Horton Country Park, Epsom, for a morning ride - this generally splits into three groups: fast, slow and off-road. There is also a Sunday ride that aims to do around 50 miles and be home by late lunchtime and off-road trail rides on Wednesday and Thursday. Click here for more details about our rides.

We promote a number of racing events and also have an annual Club Dinner and dance; as well as BBQs and other social events.

New members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining please refer to our 'Join Us' page.

Club Night is every fortnight on a Thursday. It is held on the first Thursday of the month at The Rifleman pub in Epsom from about 8:45pm until 10:30pm. The third Thursday we are based at the Worcester Park Athletics Club in Green Lane.

We also organise a number of social get-togethers, such as barbeques, which to which all members are invited - further details appear on the blog from time to time. These are generally held at the homes of members and the addresses are on the address list circulated to members, if you need details of the address of any of these events, please email the secretary or phone the householder if a number is listed on the blog entry.
